01 / THE MATCHMAKER’S WORK

Every detail
points to a fit.

As I listen, I mentally work through the products or services I sell. Each customer detail checks a box, rules an option out, or tells me what I still need to ask.

I narrow the catalog to one or two choices, then explain my recommendation in the customer’s own words. Furniture, appliances, equipment, software, service packages—the process follows the person and what they need.

NO SALES PITCHES!

My recommendation comes from the conversation we just had.
  1. 01

    Help and listen

Start with their actual purpose. Let them talk and follow the useful details.

  2. 02

    Confirm their boxes

Repeat their words. Clarify essentials, preferences, budget, and timing.

  3. 03

    Work through your catalog

Rule out essential mismatches. Compare what remains against their most important wants.

  4. 04

    Narrow to one or two

Show their requested option first. Present the strongest match or two meaningful choices.

  5. 05

    Recommend in their words

Explain why it fits, name any compromise, and ask whether they are ready to go ahead.

  6. 06

    Learn from hesitation

Ask what is holding them back and what you may have missed. Then listen and use the answer.

YOUR NEXT SENTENCE

“You said ‘I need removable covers’ and ‘it has to fit this small room.’ These two meet those requirements. I recommend this one because it also stays within your total budget.”

An illustrative furniture example: confirmed priorities narrow the catalog. Use verified dimensions, features, and costs to explain why your finalist fits.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE

03 / A PERSONAL EXAMPLE

The sale started
in another aisle.

01 Help with the original errand.02 Give them someone to remember.03 Welcome the next conversation.

While selling phones and postpaid plans in a Walmart, I offered to help a woman using an electric scooter. She needed something unrelated to phones. I walked her to the item and helped her choose.

Only after helping did I mention what I sold. A couple of days later, she came back with her son to talk about phone plans. I made two sales that day.

“When selling, I view it as being a matchmaker.”

The setting was phone sales. The mentality applies across categories. Her original errand came first. For me, the business lesson is in why she remembered me: useful help gave her a particular person to trust and return to.

Sales targets are real. Honest, accurate information gives customers grounds to trust your recommendation. For someone expecting a pitch, that can be a refreshing, memorable experience. Ask for the sale when the fit is clear, and give them a reason to seek you out again.

THE HONEST NO-SALE RECOMMENDATION

Honest advice
is memorable.

“Actually, from the way it sounds, what you have actually is the best thing for you right now.”

I have said this to a customer. The playbook teaches you to compare an upgrade fairly, explain what changes, and recommend keeping the current product when it still does the job.

An honest answer gives the customer a reason to trust your judgment when their needs change. The training connects that credibility with purposeful sales activity and a clear next step.

A FEW PRACTICAL DETAILS

Before you start.

Is this only for selling phones?

No. My phone-sales stories are personal examples. The framework applies across products and services. The guides teach catalog selection, recommendations using the customer’s words, and how to discover what a hesitation means. Practice with the offerings you actually sell.

What exactly do I receive?

The individual product contains a twelve-page playbook in PDF and editable Word formats, plus a start guide and individual-use terms. The manager edition also contains a nine-page manager guide and permission to train staff at one physical location.

Can I use this to train my staff?

Choose the Manager Edition for internal training at one physical business location. You can print and adapt working copies for that team. Public sharing, resale, and selling training to outside clients are not included.

Do I have to memorize a script?

No. Use the examples to understand the purpose of each step, then adapt the wording. The exercises teach you to follow the customer’s answer, confirm their priorities, narrow your catalog, and recommend using their own words. The hesitation question is a genuine invitation to tell you what you missed.
